We just never know where those choices will eventually lead us, what doors they will open, and what doors they will close.
I was born in Chicago and grew up northwest of the city. My parents weren't city-folk, which may explain why I spent my time riding horses, motorcycles and snowmobiles, and why I was more interested in playing softball, fishing and hunting than just about anything else except reading.
I started reading at age four, and read voraciously. I began writing at about age ten, and finished my first "manuscript" at age twelve. I worked on two or three story ideas after that, and switched to poetry during high school; a phase that pretty much ended when I graduated.
I first attended Illinois Wesleyan University, declaring a double major in Foreign Language (I had already taken four years of German in high school) and Sociology. Two years later I decided that I had no interest in becoming a teacher or in going into politics. I was clueless, at that point, as to "what I wanted to be when I grew up."
First school, and then simply life distracted me from writing. I moved to Texas; initially to the Gulf Coast in Corpus Christi, and then to Dallas. While there, I got involved in breeding and racing horses, but that's another story.
I met my spouse while living in Dallas. Not long afterward, I found myself in Louisville, Kentucky, and had acquired two step-children, two children, thoroughbred horses, and a "Mom & Pop" pizza place; and that, too, is another story.
Having children spawned an interest in genealogy. For the unitiated, genealogy is a research black hole which will siphon off hundreds of hours of your life as it grows exponentially with each "success." The effort to form some sort of cohesion out of the thousands of bits of research reminded me of writing, and I began working on a family history. As I did so, just the craft of writing came alive for me again.
Eventually I divested myself of the thoroughbreds, the restaurant, and the spouse, which--not too surprisingly--opened up more time for me to spend writing. Currently I live and write from amidst the barely-controlled chaos of two daughters and an assortment of pets in the midwestern United States. If nothing else, it's never dull!
Thank you for your interest! I hope to be given the privilege of bringing some small share of enjoyment and adventure to you.
